For those of you who haven’t already caught wind of Old Chang Kee’s newest venture, this local brand has set foot in Covent Garden, London! A bright yellow shop donning the words Singapore’s famous curry puffs since 1956, you’re bound to see it (or catch a whiff of the familiar smells).
We were curious as to what this UK branch had in store and were quite heartened to see our staple curry puff is still on the menu. However, unlike in Singapore, they have 3 variations – one with potato, one with both chicken and potato and lastly one with chicken, potato and egg. I guess the last one’s the closest to what we have locally.
It was intriguing to see Singapore Chilli Crab Puffs and Black Pepper Tuna Puffs are on the menu. Perhaps these flavours would resonate better with Londoners as opposed to a strong, spicy and fishy puff like sardine.
As compared to the price in Singapore, the puffs are around 2.5 times more expensive, but for a taste of Singapore in the UK? I think that’s worth the money.
Additionally, Old Chang Kee UK has included some Asian favourites into their menu like curries, laska and nasi lemak. For food in London, I feel that the prices aren’t really that expensive (unless you’re comparing with our local prices of course).
The menu seems to be carefully curated to include local favourites as well as foods that might potentially cater to the British demographic. However, having friends and family in London, I’m sure they’ll be just as excited to get a taste of home without having to pay the airfare back.
Whether the food is true to local flavours or a more westernised version of it still remains to be seen, but if I’m ever in London, I’ll definitely hit this Old Chang Kee up!
