Since 2017, there have been talks of A&W returning to Singapore, but now we know its first outlet is going to be housed in Changi Airport’s new shopping complex and attraction Jewel. It might just be the nostalgia talking, but A&W, we’ve been waiting for an eternity for you to return to Singapore since you left us in the lurch in 2003. We’ve missed your delicious creamy root beer floats, coneys loaded with minced beef and special savoury sauce… we really could go on.
More good news awaits: Shake Shack is going to open its first ever outlet in Jewel as well. It’s a strong contender among the likes of other raved burger joints from the United States such as In-N-Out and Smashburger. Forbes has reported that Shake Shack will also be opening an outlet in the Philippines in 2019. This New York creation appears to be quickly infiltrating the Southeast Asian market, and for a good reason.
Forget KFC’s cheese fries. Shake Shack’s take involves a blend of American and cheddar cheese heaped generously over crinkle cut fries. As for the burgers, The Shack Stack is a monstrous combination of a patty, a whole Portobello mushroom and their absurdly flavourful savoury and tangy Shack Sauce.
According to The Straits Times, Jewel will be connected to Terminal 1, and air-conditioned bridges will link it to Terminals 2 and 3. Packed with 10 storeys of 300 shopping and food outlets, it is scheduled to open in early 2019.
