It is of no secret that Singaporeans cannot live without seafood: cereal prawns, fish-head curry; not forgetting about our very own world-famous chilli crab. If you’re having a seafood craving in the CBD area, we’ve got just the thing for you!
Just a stone’s throw away from Tanjong Pagar MRT is Chunky Lobsters, which serves freshly made lobster rolls daily. As passionate lobster lovers, we were very keen to try their lobster rolls for ourselves.
Located at the second floor of Oxley Tower the entrance of Chunky Lobsters is almost impossible to miss. The restaurant has a fashionably-casual feel with minimalist modern decor, decked with a simple menu and friendly staffs. With only a stretch of stand-alone table and a few chairs, Chunky Lobsters focuses more on takeaway and aims to provide quality meals for CBD dwellers.
At Chunky Lobsters, you literally get chunks of lobster, unlike the diced lobster you often get in other restaurants. The huge chunks of Canadian lobster flesh, affirm that what you getting is 100% lobster meat—in addition to the pleasant burst of flavour in your mouth.
For people who are afraid of burning a hole in their pockets, fret not, Chunky Lobsters promises three different types of lobster roll, all at an affordable price of S$16 nett.
We tried the Chunky’s Original (S$16) and we were immediately sold. Lightly coated in a homemade lemon butter sauce and mayonnaise mingling in a seductive pas de deux, the generous chunks of juicy lobster flesh were snuggled in a pillow of soft brioche buns that was crispy on the surface, and warm and buttery on the inside.
The flavours complemented one another well and the roll had a good balance of sweet and savoury. This was definitely no ordinary lobster roll. For those who would love to have a taste of high heaven, we highly recommend this lobster roll to you.
The Chunky Cheesy (S$16) would be a definite hit amongst cheese lovers. The lobster roll is sprinkled with mozzarella, cheddar, parmesan sprinkles that flow right through the buttery brioche buns.
However, we personally felt that the cheese has overwhelmed the natural sweetness of the lobster. Personally, we preferred the original one as we could enjoy the flavour of the generous chunks of lobster meat. Nonetheless, for those who have an avid love for cheese, this would be a shot not to miss.
Together with the sandwich, you’ll get a side of hot cassava chips with each order of lobster roll. Complete your meal with an additional bowl of piping hot Lobster Bisque and a cup of Ice Lemon Tea for only $3.90.
We finished off the amazing food experience of the day with the classic buttery lobster Connecticut ($16).
Unlike the previous two, this sandwich was brushed with melted butter which added flavour while highlighting the lobster. For butter lovers like me, this was the perfect lobster roll. Definitely, one not to miss!
Gone are the days where we could only satisfy this massive craving from restaurants such as Luke’s Lobsters in New York City or Burger and Lobster in London. Gone are the days where we would pin so hard to find a good lobster roll fix or to sleep off our cravings.
Now, we can all enjoy an amazing lobster roll in our vicinity at an affordable price. Do head down soon before lunchtime as the queue might get crazy during peak hours!
Oh and before we forget, Oxley Tower might be a little too far for some of you, so a little lobster told us that Chunky Lobsters will be rolling out a new outlet at Cathay opening in August. A new store, affiliated with Chunky Lobsters, Chunky Crabs will also be opening at China Square this September. We can only imagine what delicious dishes are going to be served there.
If you’ll be visiting the Singapore Garden Festival 2018 from 21st July to 3rd August at Gardens By The Bay, so drop by the Chunky Lobsters booth to get a taste of their succulent and affordable lobster roll!
