We’re all about that instant life nowadays. Who has time to groggily wake up in the morning and dump a bunch of fruit into the blender for that insta-perfect smoothie? Think about the tedious process of cleaning up too. The reason most of us just opt for convenience store coffee before work or boxed juice from the supermarket for a day at the beach is probably because we can’t summon the energy or make the time when our minds have been preoccupied with work for the entire week. We just want to relax.
That’s why while it’s true the healthy livin’ hashtag isn’t always convenient, Doki Doki is a strong contender against this claim. This instant superfood juice originates out of the Southeast Asian tropics, and offers a fuss-free way to create your own fruit purees – the fruit is even particular to this region!
Dragonfruit, soursop, passionfruit, blueberry and calamansi come in adorable little sachets that’ll make your heart go ‘doki doki’. Really, the illustrations are super cute. You won’t even want to throw the packaging away. Japanese lettering and charming little fruit illustrations really work together to create that ‘kawaii’ effect.
Each fruit flavour is even paired with superfoods like chia seeds and kale. With each serving containing less than 100 calories, made with fresh fruit, and with zero artificial flavouring, colouring or concentrate, this can definitely help to kickstart a healthy lifestyle.
All you’ve got to do is pour the puree into a cup, fill it with water and ice, and you’re good to go. Of course, there’s room for experimentation. Mix it with soft drinks (all the zero calorie ones of course), make it into jelly with gelatin sheets, add it to black tea, the list goes on.
We’ve tried all five of the fruit crushes and paired each one to the perfect occasion in our fast-paced, modern lifestyles.
1. Blueberry with Acai BerryOccasion: This antioxidant booster is great for on-the-go working adults with 9-6 jobs (not forgetting that overtime till 9 or 10pm). Consumption of blueberries aids in reducing the risk of diabetes, obesity and heart disease, all of which are easy to fall ill with if you’re stuck at your desk for 9 hours every day. Acai berries are chock full of antioxidants, double that of blueberries, and this will help your cardiovascular system to keep chugging along.
Our verdict: Most blueberry flavoured drinks are either too sweet or the artificial flavouring leaves a strange aftertaste in your mouth. Thankfully, this fruit drink is authentically blueberry – it tastes as through you were crunching into the fruit itself. The acai adds a second layer of flavour to the drink, resulting in a balanced blend of berries.
2. Calamansi Ginger with Kale
Occasion: Detox, detox, detox. How often have you heard that in today’s society? However, this juice isn’t a gimmick or a fad. Studies have discovered that calamansi helps to lower cholesterol levels and give your metabolism a little boost. This juice is perfect to add into your routine of relaxation and self-care. Had a long day at school or your job? Sip this while unwinding with a face mask or some hand cream.
Our verdict: The calamansi wasn’t overly sour, and paired with a gingery kick, this was really a palette refresher. The two flavours standing on their own could’ve proved to be overpowering as the aromas of both are typically powerful, but in this case, they complimented each other nicely.
3. Passion Fruit with Camu Camu
Occasion: Beef up your immunity system if you’re feeling under the weather, maybe if you’re about to travel. Travelling can be fun, but it can also throw your sleep cycle into chaos, dry out your skin, and bring you into close contact with many other individuals, some of whom might be under the weather as well. Passionfruit acts as an immunity booster as it contains high levels of Vitamin C, boosting the production of white blood cells. Toss in some camu camu which is full of Vitamin C as well, and your body will be revitalised.
Our verdict: The passionfruit was vibrant, though we felt that it could’ve been a little more tart. Less water to puree ratio in the future, perhaps? A nice crunch was added to the drink with the sour camu camu seeds.
4. Dragonfruit with Chia Seeds & 5. Soursop with Chia Seeds
Occasion: These tropical flavours compliment your picnic at the beach, or really, anywhere outdoorsy and sunny. Dragonfruit and soursop are bursting with fibre and antioxidants, aiding in digestion by helping to cultivate the flora in your gut. With chia seeds, which smoothen your bowel movements, a cool flask full of these drinks will cool you down and help your food digest well.
Our verdict: The mouthfeel of food is always important, and these drinks excelled in that area. The generous portion of chia seeds create a jelly-like texture that glides down your throat easily. As for the flavours, soursop is abundantly fibrous and rich, while dragonfruit is sadly a little underwhelming.
If we had to choose our favourites amongst all the drinks, we’d probably go with the soursop.
