Singapore’s no stranger to reigning first place in gastronomy. You want it, we have it. The 2018 Michelin Star List announced just recently further proves the calibre and myriad of food this tiny Red Dot has to offer. From French to contemporary Japanese cuisine, the list goes on. But a newborn local restaurant claiming to have the best stuffed wings in the world? You have to try it for yourself to believe it.
Introducing StuffedWing — the latest wingular creation in town with a mission to disrupt the chicken wing industry. But make no mistake: they’re not your regular heavy sauce-battered brand. Drawing inspiration from Thai and Vietnamese style chicken wings, the folks at StuffedWing create each piece by skillfully deboning a full large 3-joint wing. Then, they stuff it with fillings —done so immaculately you can barely tell anyone touched the wing—, cleverly creating a snack that fills your tummy like a meal.
Now, before you expect a fancy restaurant with luxurious interior design and extravagant pricing, it’s far from that. Instead, this Broson Catering eatery is housed at Tampines Mall’s Kopitiam with super affordable prices. We had the chance to be the first to try their acclaimed boneless goodness before their opening day on Thursday, right in their central kitchen.
Four words: Out. Of. This. World. (Well, at least for the flavours that worked).
Before you sink your teeth into this juicy awesomeness, here’s how you eat it: hold it as you would with a burger, but with two fingers. Attack it by the rear and finish it in two mouthfuls. Take another one. And another.
It’s not just the concept that’s interesting, but the flavours offered as well. Specially catered for the Singaporean market across all ages, all ingredients are locally sourced. Sauces, including their dips, are made from scratch too. While the Original Stuffed Prawns ($2.90 ala carte, $5.90 set) lacks finesse, their other signature flavours make up for it. Our top two picks? The Ultra Sedap Nasi Lemak ($5.90 ala carte, $6.80 set) and Tantalizing Curry Potatoes ($5.90 ala carte, $6.80 set).
Both are reminiscent of actual nasi lemak and curry chicken your grandmother used to cook, with the latter reminding us of an Old Chang Kee curry puff — but a toned down and less spicy protein-filled version. Given, we wish the aroma could be up a notch, but it’s as authentic and homemade as it gets.
The OMGooey Mac & Cheese ($5.90 ala carte, $6.80 set) would definitely be a hit among the kids, and even if you’re not a cheese lover, you’ll enjoy it as well as the explosion of flavour upon taking a bite settles nicely in your mouth. We know how cloying cheese can get after awhile, but rest assure this one doesn’t. In line with the salted egg craze that never seems to die out (and probably never will), their Shiok Salted Egg Prawns ($5.90 ala carte, $6.80 set) is a hit or miss, depending on whether you’re a fan of salted egg.
Their sides —which consists of different types of fries— does the job of complementing well with the wings. Try their Champion Fries ($3.50) — named Champion because it’s made of Chicken and Ham.
They also have Truffle Fries with Parmesan Cheese ($5.90), rivaling that of P.S. Café’s at half the price.
Claiming to have the best stuffed wings in the world is a huge responsibility to bear, and while StuffedWing is still far from world domination and appearing in the Michelin books, their passion and dedication for creating authentic food may well serve them to follow the footsteps of other humble coffee shop success stories such as Boon Tong Kee and New Ubin Seafood. We’ll definitely be looking forward to see how they further expand their menu.
