Having family or friends over for a hearty steamboat session at the comfort of my own home equates to donning lapsup pyjamas, looping cheesy Taylor Swift playlists, and just simply being able to feel right at home (yes, pun intended here) while pigging out. However, the fuss and muss that comes with it is always such a mood killer, but not with HotPot Master as my salvation to all those preparation and cleaning woes!
HotPot Master is a hotpot delivery service that delivers a restaurant-level dining experience straight to your doorsteps. To order, simply head on to their ordering website www.hotpotmaster.sg to browse through their selection of ala carte items, hotpot or BBQ sets. Upon checkout, select the option of “delivery with table setup and collection” (+ $50) to enjoy the full service of delivery, on-site setup and preparation, return collection, and basic clean-up. Otherwise, you could also choose delivery without setup (+ $25) or free self-collection at 1 Enterprise Road.
Being notoriously lazy, I chose the option of “delivery with table setup & collection” without hesitation. Not only did they arrive right on the dot, within 30 minutes, my humble-looking living room was transformed into some atas private dining room straight out of a restaurant.
A heavy satin tablecloth draped over the long dining table with the ceramic tableware all beautifully laid out, adding some class to the otherwise plain makeshift dining area. Hygiene is guaranteed as the delivery staff made sure to wear gloves throughout the process.
To make up for the lack of space, side stands were also set up to accommodate the hotpot ingredients, soup bases, bottles of 8 Treasure floral tea, and dessert (though having to go back and forth to the side stands proved to be quite an exercise).
They even taped the wires from the power extension to prevent anyone from tripping over. How attentive!
All in all, the swift setup and presentation all exceeded my expectations and I find the $50 additional charge to be really worth it, especially when there are guests invited over and you want to WOW them! The induction cooker, tableware, yuan yang pot, and BBQ hotplate are also all included in the setup as part of the package, and you can confirm all these details when HotPot Master’s Customer Service representative calls you for your order confirmation.
HotPot Master’s Signature Hotpot Sets are currently having a promotion till 31 Dec 2018, and I ordered the 10-pax set which costs $298, excluding the delivery charges.
They have 5 soup bases for us to choose from and I got their most popular Superior Collagen Soup as well as my personal must-have Yang Sheng Mala Soup.
Their Signature Hotpot Sets do come with complimentary top-up soups in thermos flasks, so you don’t have to fear running out of soups.
The 10-pax set also includes an exclusive marinated drunken ½ chicken, and the delivery personnel started boiling it in the Superior Collagen broth base before leaving. The chicken needs to be cooked for about 20 minutes, and we were reminded to constantly stir it in case the chicken settles and burns at the pot base. So for those who are famished, they may want to start grilling on the BBQ hotplate or cooking in the mala broth first.
On first taste, the soup bases were jam-packed with flavours! The collagen soup was really gao with a strong herbal taste, while the mala soup was peppery, savoury, and came with a shiok fiery kick from its hot chilli oil. But one thing to note is that the collagen soup was mixed with the marinate from the drunken chicken and it does leave a lingering bitter alcohol aftertaste in your mouth. I would suggest requesting the delivery personnel to not pour the marinate into the broth at the start, unless you and your hotpot kakis enjoy such flavours.
Oh, and if you are someone that doesn’t enjoy the sticky feeling from slurping collagen soups, do get its other soup bases as my lips and throat got really sticky about 15 minutes into the meal (though it didn’t really bother me as much since I could just wash it down with the tea provided).
I also highly recommend ordering additional Ala Carte broths which are reasonably priced at $9.80 per portion (1.5 litre) if you belong to #teamgaosoup! Remember the top-up soup? It was actually plain, general soup stock so it did kind of water down the broths on every pour. But as my family and I dumped in the various hotpot ingredients throughout the meal, their natural sweetness seeped through to the broths so it didn’t really matter much.
HotPot Master’s Signature Hotpot Set for 10 pax comes with a basic variety of ingredients, though nothing fanciful, they came amazingly fresh and well-presented in takeaway boxes! The star of the set was definitely their handmade signatures that included fish maw paste, tobiko prawn paste, mushroom chicken paste, fish dumplings, teochew meat balls, and fish balls.
All their handmade goodies had the right balance of salty, sweet and umami flavours, and judging by the rate that they were running out, we regretted not making additional orders through their Ala Carte menu.
The crowd favourite was the tobiko prawn paste, where every bite was a plethora of textures. The crunchy fish roe paired with the bouncy prawn paste was a match made in heaven, mmmmm yumz.
Other than the hotpot, we also had a BBQ hotplate for some grilled delights. Those tender pork belly slices and black pepper chicken sizzling on the grill smelt so good, and every meaty, juicy bite was savoury and very much enjoyable! I do not recommend grilling the pork collar slices as all of them turned out really dry (would be better to cook them in the hotpot soup).
If you are a cheese lover, you would be damn glad to know that Hotpot Master is launching cheese (mozarella+ nacho cheese) dips to be melted on top of the grill plate!! My niece polished them off single-handedly and I quote her: “Everything goes well with this cheese leh, I can even just eat it on its own!”
And if you are someone who can’t appreciate cheese dips, no worries as the set also comes with a selection of 12 sauces. I highly recommend my go-to sauce recipe that includes soya sauce, chilli padi, coriander, sesame oil, and a dash of minced garlic. But feel free to be a sauce Picasso and come up with your own concoctions of dipping sauces!
The set also arrived with an ice box and six 500ml bottles of 8 Treasure Floral tea to quench your thirst. It was pretty much an acquired taste as my family went from “hmm, it tastes kind of weird” to “yay, let’s have seconds!” The tea was kind of bland but had a subtle sweetness to it? I just like a cooling drink after a heavy, greasy meal and this does the trick for me.
And did I mention that we do get to keep the condiment glass containers and drink bottles? So if you can’t finish them, feel free to keep them in your fridge.
Ending the meal on a sweet note with their ice dessert was a pleasant surprise. Though it looked unappealing and straight out of cans, they are easily one of the best dessert jellies I had! More than half of the container was filled with Aiyu jelly, the lime balanced the sweetness from the fruit cocktail, and everything was just simply refreshing and palate cleansing.
The delivery personnel then came back in the evening 5 hours later for return collection and to clean things up. It only took about 20 minutes and everything was returned to its original state!
All in all, it was a fuss-free and delightful hotpot and bbq experience. The top-notch service from HotPot Master made us felt like Kings and Queens for a day, and I just hope that there would be improvements made to the standards of the top-up soups to be on par with their services. Currently, HotPot Master is having a Black Friday promotion from 23 to 25 Nov 2018, with additional $50 off every Signature Hotpot set ordered! Now, the 6-pax and 10-pax sets cost only $148 and $248 respectively! This is the time to jio all your family and friends for some atas hotpot experience!
